FAR BETTER STAY · EDITORIAL

Make space for looking, not just arriving

A design-led visit works best when there is time to observe materials, light and the relationship between a building and its surroundings. Choose one substantial visit per day. Keep a separate list of optional stops rather than booking every hour before you understand the distances.

This is a suggested way to organise a stay, not a claim that the entire city is walkable. Check transport between areas and allow flexibility for the actual conditions on the day. A beautiful image is not evidence that a location is open to visitors.

The building belongs to the museum visit

At the National Museum of Anthropology, give the central courtyard some of the attention you would give an object in a case. The monumental canopy known as El Paraguas and the pool form two contrasting parts of the space. The museum’s account of its architecture explains this distinction through light; it is a useful thing to look for as you move between galleries.

Choose a few rooms to spend time in, then return to the courtyard. Looking at a building after being inside it is different from taking its photograph on arrival. You have begun to understand how it directs your movement, where it opens out and where you want to stop.

In Casa Azul, look beyond the blue

The exterior gives the Frida Kahlo Museum its familiar name, but the kitchen offers another way into the house. The museum describes it as a traditional domestic space; pots and dishes make the idea of a home more tangible than the blue walls alone. Look at the room as a room before treating each object as a symbol.

Put this Coyoacán visit on a separate part of the itinerary rather than squeezing it behind another major museum. Book through the official visitor page and recheck the current entry arrangements. Once the time is fixed, leave the rest of that outing comparatively loose.

Read the neighbourhood between the landmarks

Choose a compact area for an afternoon and notice shopfronts, courtyards and everyday spaces as well as major architecture. Stay on publicly accessible routes and ask before photographing private interiors. Leave room to pause; observing a place is different from collecting an address list.

What to send with a hotel enquiry

Share your confirmed appointments, preferred neighbourhoods and any mobility requirements. Ask the advisor to compare suitable hotels against those routes. Verify the room category, total quote and terms separately from the itinerary. Museum admission, transfers and hotel reservations are different arrangements unless your written quote explicitly includes them.
