One&Only Palmilla is the corridor’s original luxury address — a 1950s estate grown into the region’s benchmark resort — and it holds the one practical advantage that most beautiful hotels on this coastline cannot offer: a stretch of sea you can actually swim in. This is a booking guide, not a review: what the property is, which categories matter, and what to check before you commit dates.

Why this property

Palmilla began in 1956 as a small seaside hideaway at the rocky point that gives it its name, decades before Los Cabos became a resort corridor, and it carries that head start visibly: mature gardens, whitewashed Mexican-colonial architecture, a hillside chapel that has anchored weddings for generations. Today it operates as the flagship-tier property of the One&Only collection, with roughly 170 rooms, suites, and villas terraced between the gardens and the sea.

Three things keep it at the top of our Los Cabos list.

The swimmable water. Most first-time visitors do not learn until arrival that much of the Los Cabos coastline is unswimmable — dramatic Pacific surf, strong currents, red flags on beautiful sand. Palmilla’s protected cove is one of the corridor’s rare exceptions.

If the picture in your head involves actually getting in the sea rather than admiring it, this one fact should shape the shortlist more than any design detail.

Special-occasion service, as a habit. This is a property whose staff-to-guest rhythm is built around occasions — arrival details, celebration touches, the kind of pacing a honeymoon actually wants. Personal butler service runs across the room categories, which on a milestone trip converts directly into mornings that start well and requests that get handled without a front-desk queue.

Food worth staying in for. The resort’s dining runs from a Jean-Georges Vongerichten steak-and-seafood room to ocean-terrace Mexican cooking, and evenings on property hold their own against a drive into town — which matters, because the resort’s location favors staying in. For honeymoons we usually plan around a private beach-dinner night as the anchor booking.

Choosing your room

The ladder here is less about square footage and more about position and privacy — this is where an advisor earns the call.

Entry and ocean-view rooms. Even the entry categories are generously sized and garden-wrapped; the meaningful early upgrade is aspect, not floor plan. Ocean-view categories put the Sea of Cortés in the frame from bed, and for a first-visit honeymoon that is usually where we point the budget before anything else.

Suite tiers. The suite range adds terrace living space and, in the upper tiers, plunge pools and standalone privacy. Couples splitting a ten-day trip between two properties often do their Palmilla nights at suite level and economize elsewhere — sequencing we are happy to build.

Villas and the top end. The villa product operates almost as a resort within the resort — multiple bedrooms, private pools, dedicated staffing — and books on its own rhythm, well ahead for holiday weeks. If a family celebration or a wedding party is the occasion, start the conversation months early and we will quote it directly.

Location and getting there

The resort sits at Palmilla point on the corridor’s eastern, San José del Cabo end — around 20 to 30 minutes from Los Cabos International Airport, roughly half the transfer of the far Cabo San Lucas end. Nonstop flights reach Los Cabos from most major U.S. West Coast and hub airports in two to three and a half hours, which is why this destination competes so well against the Caribbean for West Coast honeymoons: serious luxury, minor jet lag.

The point location is deliberately removed from the marina bustle of Cabo San Lucas — that scene is a 25-to-35-minute drive when you want it, and absent when you do not. The 27 holes of Jack Nicklaus-designed golf next door at Palmilla’s course round out the on-point options.

Before you book

The details that shape the real experience and the real total:

• Season is strategy. November through June is the reliable window. July through September brings heat, humidity, and tropical-storm exposure — and in some years the resort takes late-summer weeks for maintenance closure. Never lock late-summer dates anywhere in Los Cabos without checking the specific property’s calendar; we do this against your exact dates as step one.
• The whale window. Roughly mid-December through March adds whale-watching to the trip from much of the property’s shoreline — a free upgrade to a honeymoon if the dates are flexible enough to catch it.
• Book the anchors early. The chapel, the private beach dinners, and the top spa slots book ahead of the rooms around holidays. We place those holds when we place the room, not after arrival.
• Taxes and service charges. Mexico resort bills carry taxes and service charges on top of quoted rates that meaningfully change the total. Our quotes show the landed number, not the teaser rate.
