The art of a slow Paris morning

A coffee, a market and one good reason not to rush.

A chair is a good beginning

The chairs in the Luxembourg Garden are a small but telling detail. They offer a different invitation from a bench fixed to one view: sit down, choose where to look, stay a little. The garden’s own history records the Sénat chair model appearing in 1923. An ordinary piece of furniture has become part of the way people picture this corner of Paris.

You do not have to make a whole morning of the garden. A short visit between breakfast and a walk is enough. Find an available seat, leave the phone in your pocket for a few minutes and let the view be whatever happens to be in front of you.

Breakfast need not be a destination

A famous café can be worth a special trip. It can also turn breakfast into the first appointment of a demanding day. For this morning, choose somewhere that fits the walk you already want to take. Sit inside if that is more comfortable; a pavement table is not a test you have to pass.

Order what you actually feel like eating. The useful luxury is time to finish it without checking how far behind schedule you are. If a companion wants another coffee, the rest of the morning should be able to survive it.

Follow one direction out of the garden

Luxembourg sits between the Latin Quarter, Saint-Germain-des-Prés and Montparnasse. Choose one direction when you leave, rather than trying to stitch all three together. Look into a bookshop if one catches your eye; take a side street without requiring it to lead to a recommended address.

A market can be part of this kind of morning, provided you check its trading day first. It need not be the reason the morning succeeds. If it is closed, keep walking. There is a difference between wanting to see a place and making the entire outing depend on it.

End before it becomes an itinerary

Leave enough time to return to your room before the next fixed booking. There is pleasure in coming back with nothing more urgent to do than put down a bag or change shoes. A morning does not need a concluding landmark.

If this sounds like the way you want to travel, location matters more than a long list of hotel features. Look at the streets around a possible stay and the route back from the places you care about. Keep opening times and any reservations in a practical note; let the morning itself remain a little less organised.
